Andra Motreanu*

Interview with Álvaro Lobato de Faria, Coordinating Director of MAC (Movement for Contemporary Art), Lisbon and with Romeo Niram, painter
- Journalist: Mr. -Alvaro Lobato de Faria can you explain in a few words what is MAC?- Alvaro Lobato de Faria: MAC is an exhibition space created almost 14 years ago, with the intent to promote the Portuguese Fine Arts. It was initially created for the young artists but what happened was that the confirmed artists discovered it and began to approach me for exhibitions, pushing aside the young artists. At the beginning, I had a hard work to do to make the two groups of artists work together nicely, because I didn’t want to give up the young artists. It was with and for them that MAC was created and it was my job to make the confirmed artists accept and support the younger ones. But beginning with the 4th or 5th year things started to really work in this direction, nowadays when there are debates in schools, in cultural institutions both young and confirmed artists are present, there is an open dialogue, an exchange of ideas, a mutual support and this makes me very happy, the initial problem has finally been solved and is something of the past. At MAC, I give away every year a special prize to the young artists, and it is wonderful to see how everybody comes together in harmony.- Journalist: How did you turn into the main focus for a Brancusi homage in Portugal?- Alvaro Lobato de Faria: Brancusi was an important reference for me, and I had always talked about his work with artists. I already knew a lot about his life and work, but I realised that he wasn’t very familiar to the Portuguese people. MAC has organized many events to commemorate important Portuguese and foreign artists and, as this year we celebrate 50 years since Brancusi´s passing away, I thought it was the right time to give a lecture on his work and make his name known in Portugal. So, one day, as I was talking to Romeo Niram about my admiration for him, this idea for a lecture on Brancusi came up, and I asked him to accompany my speech with his painting. Therefore he started making a series of paintings celebrating Brancusi´s work, I have already seen 3 of these paintings, one of which will be exhibited at MAC, in the collective exhibition, which celebrates 13 years of MAC activity in Portugal. So, the lecture I gave on Brancusi served its purpose to make his work known in Portugal, and at least the people who were at the lecture and many others, who read the lecture on the Internet, where it is entirely published, know now his name and something about his work. It was my first lecture on a Romanian artist, I have given many lectures in many parts of the world, but I am glad to say that it was a première to me, to talk about the art of an artist from Eastern Europe. I consider however that Brancusi is not Romanian, nor Eastern European, he is a universal artist belonging to the world heritage. I have never been to Romania but now that I am so familiar with Brancusi´s work, I really want to visit his birth country.-Journalist: Mr. Niram, what did this celebration of Brancusi in Lisbon mean to you?
-Romeo Niram: As a Romanian and as an artist, Brancusi represents one of the most fascinating personalities. I noticed the lack of information that exists in Portugal about him and his work. There are so many studies, albums, books and articles published about him in so many languages and countries, and yet nobody seemed to know him in Portugal. When I first met Mr. Alvaro de Faria, I discovered that we shared this common passion for his art and we came up with this idea for a lecture. The timing was perfect, this year there is the commemoration of 50 years since his death. I know that there have been many celebrations held in order to commemorate this event in many cities Paris, Madrid, New York, Budapest, and I didn’t want Portugal, the country I now live in, to be the only one that shouldn’t organize any celebrations. So, I talked also to Cornel Mihalache, the director of the most important documentary film on Brancusi, and together we decided to project this film for the Portuguese audience, after the lecture of Prof. Alvaro Lobato de Faria. The evening ended with a painting exhibition, that was my personal tribute to Brancusi. I was very happy to be able to do something in the name of art, to make the name of the greatest Romanian artist of all times known also in Portugal.- Journalist: Professor, how did you construct your lecture?- Alvaro Lobato de Faria: After talking to Romeo Niram and deciding to go forward with the lecture, I got terrified. Brancusi is a myth, a world reference in art and I had very little time to prepare the lecture. I will be very sincere and say that I didn’t’ find any material, or very little in Portuguese. I went to sculptors to ask them about him and I found out they did not know him or, and this is something which left me flabbergast, they said they knew about him just out of shame. I went to the Gulbenkian library and found very little material, I talked to the general director of Gulbenkian and he did not know about him. I tried other cultural institutions in Portugal but there are no books on Brancusi. I was extremely disappointed and I had to do an extensive research on the internet. The painter Maria João Franco helped me a lot with my research and also an IT expert who made the PowerPoint presentation and helped me with the technical part. I was extremely honoured to be able to give a lecture on such an important artist and I think it was an unforgettable evening. And although I kept on pronouncing his name wrongly, in Portuguese manner, nobody corrected me, I found out the true pronunciation of his name only after the lecture. It was a rich evening, filled with art, I am very grateful to Romania for providing this kind of cultural opportunity, and I would also like to congratulate your country for its strong cultural offensive. - Journalist: Romeo Niram will be present at the collective exhibition celebrating the 13 Anniversary of MAC. How does he fit in this Collective?- Alvaro Lobato de Faria: I met Romeo Niram for the first time almost 2 years ago, and he has always been busy with individual exhibitions in various countries, so the last time I saw him, at the Brancusi lecture, I proposed to him to exhibit one of his paintings on Brancusi at the 13 Anniversary of MAC. It is a collective exhibition, with the confirmed artists who held individual shows at MAC last year. On this occasion, MAC gives away the MAC awards for different categories: MAC Painting, MAC Sculpture, MAC Revelation for young artists, MAC Career, MAC Excellency, and also the MAC award for the journalists or the cultural programmes that best supported culture in Portugal, an award intended to revive the Portuguese cultural journalism, on paper as well as Television. It was a good idea because now journalists have started some kind of a competition between themselves in order to win the award. There is no other award for cultural journalism in Portugal, there is no interest in cultural news, so the few cultural journalists that are in the Portuguese media have now the opportunity to win this award. There are so many awards for news journalism, about what happened to this or that, about the little boy who went missing, which is very good, but there is absolutely nothing for promoting culture. So, to answer your question, when I saw Romeo Niram’s paintings live, on the day of the lecture, I liked them very much, the paintings edify Romania and edify himself. I thought that 2 or 3 of them were absolutely marvellous. I had already seen them in photos; they had been published in many journals and in Niram Art Magazine, which is founded by him, a very good magazine dedicated to the fine arts. I congratulate him and his team on such a magazine, and Eva Defeses, the editor, whom I know and is a great journalist. They managed to make the magazine known in many parts of the world and now it has become an important magazine. So, after seeing 3 of his works dedicated to Brancusi, I decided that his painting should have its place in this exhibition, and is a great honour for me and for the other artists to receive him. It is the first time that MAC presents a Romanian artist; therefore Romania will also be present. I would also like to tell you first hand that at the inauguration I will make a homage to Romania; I will speak and present your country. I think you have more will power then the Portuguese, are more united, there is a great enthusiasm in you, you speak, meet, organize events with such an energy.- Journalist: Mr. Niram, what can you tell us your participation in the MAC Collective exhibition?
-Romeo Niram: It was a great honour for me to be invited to show my painting at such a prestigious art institution that is MAC and in the presence of so many important Portuguese artist. First of all it is a great honour and privilege to me to know Professor Alvaro Lobato de Faria, who is an outstanding figure on the Portuguese cultural scene. We have started this Brancusi-mania together, we both have this “disease”, this fascination for Brancusi, he is a deep connoisseur of Brancusian art and it was a logical step to have a painting on Brancusi, or inspired by Brancusi, exhibited at MAC. - Journalist: As Prof. Alvaro Lobato de Faria has said, Niram Art Magazine has grown to be an important art magazine, and the name of Brancusi appears almost in each issue.
- Romeo Niram: Yes, the magazine has published many articles on Brancusi in Romanian, Spanish, Portuguese. He is a reference; there are so many good studies on him that it is impossible not to publish something on Brancusi. For example the last issue of the magazine published in Spanish a study by Mircea Eliade “Brancusi and the Essence of Flight”, past issues contained articles on Brancusi by Germán Arciniegas or Catalin Ghita. The more one reads or studies about his work, the more one wants to know more and study deeper into the brancusian art.- Journalist: Professor, can you tell us something about the painting that Niram will exhibit at MAC? Why did you choose this work in particular?- Alvaro Lobato de Faria: I have already written an article on Niram, I think that this painting succeeds in capturing the work of Brancusi. It is very well elaborated, it shows a lot of soul, and this is very important in the work of a painter. You can feel all the strength, the wisdom and the enthusiasm that Niram has put in it, as well as in all his other paintings. He has managed to convey a feeling; anybody who looks at it can immediately see that it is a homage to Brancusi. The collective exhibition gathers works of 30 artists so due to space limitations, I had to choose only one painting. I’ve chosen this painting not by art criticism standards, but by what it made me feel when I looked at it. I have many years of atelier practice, many painters have asked me to visit their ateliers and tell them which paintings they should exhibit. All 3 paintings on Brancusi that Niram showed me were technically good, in an equal way, very well elaborated. The paintings I choose have to give instant access into the artist’s message to the people that see them. This painting marked me from the first moment I laid my eyes on it, it told me in a second everything that the artist wanted to transmit.
- Mr. Professor Álvaro Lobato de Faria, Mr Niram thank you very much for your time.

I was very happy to be able to do something in the name of art, to make the name of the greatest Romanian artist of all times known also in Portugal.- Journalist: Professor, how did you construct your lecture?

- Alvaro Lobato de Faria: After talking to Romeo Niram and deciding to go forward with the lecture, I got terrified. How does he fit in this Collective?

- Alvaro Lobato de Faria: I met Romeo Niram for the first time almost 2 years ago, and he has always been busy with individual exhibitions in various countries, so the last time I saw him, at the Brancusi lecture, I proposed to him to exhibit one of his paintings on Brancusi at the 13 Anniversary of MAC.
The more one reads or studies about his work, the more one wants to know more and study deeper into the brancusian art.

- Journalist: Professor, can you tell us something about the painting that Niram will exhibit at MAC?

Interview with Álvaro Lobato de Faria, Coordinating Director of MAC (Movement for Contemporary Art), Lisbon and with Romeo Niram, painter
- Journalist: Mr. -Alvaro Lobato de Faria can you explain in a few words what is MAC?

- Alvaro Lobato de Faria: MAC is an exhibition space created almost 14 years ago, with the intent to promote the Portuguese Fine Arts. At MAC, I give away every year a special prize to the young artists, and it is wonderful to see how everybody comes together in harmony.- Journalist: How did you turn into the main focus for a Brancusi homage in Portugal?

- Alvaro Lobato de Faria: Brancusi was an important reference for me, and I had always talked about his work with artists.

Astfel, era datoria mea să-i fac pe cei consacraţi să-i sprijine şi să-i accepte pe cei tineri.

NIRAM ART Nº8, May 2007

Neste âmbito realizámos acções no Brasil, Cabo Verde, Guiné, projectamos ir a Angola, dar a conhecer aos nossos artistas, descobrindo igualmente outros valores, outras visões artísticas.
